Many men and women who struggle with nasal imperfections, such as asymmetry or wide nostrils, can often feel insecure about the appearance of their nose. Others may have difficulty breathing through the nose due to structural abnormalities that tend to block airflow. Rhinoplasty, or nose surgery, is a cosmetic procedure that can enhance the nose and create better facial harmony. According to the American Society of Plastic Surgeons, rhinoplasty is one of the top five plastic surgery procedures most requested by patients, with 218,924 surgeries performed in 2017.
What Can Rhinoplasty Correct?
Rhinoplasty can be performed to alter the shape and size of the nose and correct various nasal imperfections, including wide nostrils, visible bumps along the nose, nasal asymmetry, a displeasing tip, or a deviated septum. It can also revise a previous nose surgery you may be unhappy with.
Technique Options
Rhinoplasty is performed on an outpatient basis using general anesthesia. Patients interested in rhinoplasty have the option of choosing between an open or closed procedure.
- Open Procedure: Most rhinoplasty procedures are performed using the open technique because it allows the surgeon better access to reshape the structural elements of your nose. Incisions are made across the columella.
- Closed Procedure: While closed rhinoplasty involves less operation time, it does not allow your surgeon much access to the underlying structure. Incisions are hidden inside the nose.
Recovery Period
Following your rhinoplasty procedure, tubes or packing will not be placed over your nose. However, soft splints may be placed inside the nostrils for patients who have undergone extensive rhinoplasty. Dr. Carpenter will also provide you with specific instructions on how to properly care for your nose. Swelling and bruising may occur but should resolve between one and two weeks, though minor swelling may linger a little while longer.
